Dean Baker Channels Dire Straits

Mark Knopfler has always been one of my favorite artists. And among Mark Knopfler songs, the Dire Straits hit “Industrial Disease” has always topped the list. When it comes to ‘80s rock songs about macroeconomics, there really isn’t anything better.

Near the end of the song, Knopfler describes one of two people who claim to be Jesus (“one of them must be wrong”). The “first Jesus” has a cure for the depression: “Abolish Monday mornings and Friday afternoons.”

In today’s New York Times Room for Debate, Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research endorses this plan.
